Amber and Carnelian Necklace
Amber
My first trip to an outdoor market in Russia, I thought I might be in heaven. I've always been drawn to amber and there it was, aplenty and in every size and shape. And where better to behold it than outdoors in glorious sunshine.

Amber is composed of fossilized resin that formed from the sap of primeval amber pine trees. It often contains mummified insects or organic matter that have been petrified with it. It's colors range from light yellow to reddish brown, though it can also be white, blue and greenish. It can be opaque or transparent. Some of the darker clear types can look like honey.

The Greeks called it elektron, meaning sun-gold. Sophocles explained the origin of Amber as the tears shed over the death of Meleager by Indian birds. Nicias explained Amber as being the juice of the brilliant rays of the setting sun that were congealed in the sea and then cast up upon the shore.

In ancient times amber was highly prized for its talismanic powers. This stone was plentiful and the first substance used by man for decoration and is found in Stone Age deposits as talismans or amulets. Today it can be found in the Baltic coast, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, and the Dominican Republic.

With its ability to draw out negative energy, it allows the body to heal itself. Used to stimulate the metabolism and treat skin ailments, Amber should be worn in direct contact with the skin. Amber necklaces are often recommended for allergic respiratory problems. It is also good for treating rheumatism and strengthening the heart muscles.

Amber symbolizes success and arouses a feeling of joy and well-being in the wearer. It is said to ease stress, improve decision-making, and strengthen memory.

With zodiacal affinity with Leo, Amber is also an important gemstone for Gemini, Virgo and Capricorn

Aquamarine Gold Peace Bracelet
Aquamarine
Aquamarine is very special to me. My engagement ring is a huge faceted aquamarine set in a Black Hills gold setting accented with turquoise. The color is intense. This is an antique ring that I adore and most often wear instead of my wedding ring. Not only is it gorgeous, but the gemstone is so appropriately used in an engagement ring, since it brings pure love.

Aquamarine, like the emerald, belongs to the beryl family. Colors range from translucent light blue to sea green to blue-green.

Legend has it that aquamarine originally came from a mermaid’s jewelry box and it is said to bring pure love. By turning darker or lighter, the stone indicates what is true and false. The lighter it becomes, the greater the warning of falsity. In the Middle Ages aquamarine was a symbol of chastity. It is found in Brazil, Madagascar, the Urals, Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the United States.

Aquamarine has beneficial effects on the thyroid glad and is helpful in the treatment of problems with the vocal cords and speech. It can also strengthen the immune system and protect against colds and allergies.

Given to sailors as protection against drowning and for courage in battle, Aquamarine helps reduce fears and has an affinity with sensitive and mystical people. It increases creativity and sharpens intuition. Aquamarine symbolizes peace and can quiet the mind and reduce stress.

With zodiacal affinity with Aquarius, Aquamarine is also an important stone for Pisces, Libra, Taurus, and Scorpio. It is the birthstone for March.

Carnelian Butterfly Necklace
Carnelian
One of my personal favorites, Carnelian is a kind of quartz. Traces of iron give Carnelian its blood red color. Colors range from yellow, orange, red, brown and in between. It can be found in Brazil, Uruguay, India, South Africa, Australia, and the United States.

Carnelian is one of the oldest protective stone in history. The Egyptians carried it about their person as a source of energy and for renewal of vitality. In ancient Egypt it was placed in tombs as a magic armor for life after death. Carnelian is mentioned in the Bible as being used for ornamentation on breastplates for priests and soldiers.

The earth is often used as a symbol for fertility and Carnelian, in tune with the earth’s energy, strongly influences the reproductive organs. A good purifier for both the liver and the blood, it also stimulates good digestion.

Carnelian symbolizes activity and curiosity. It increases the wearer’s zest for life and improving motivation.

With zodiacal affinity with Taurus, Carnelian is also an important stone for Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Leo and Capricorn.
Citrine Moon Goddess Earrings
Citrine
I adore Citrine. Just looking at it makes me feel happy. Of course, part of that has to do with yellow being one of my favorite colors.

Citrine is a quartz and obtains its color from traces of iron. Colors range from lemon yellow to golden brown and can be transparent. Citrine can be artificially created by heating amethyst or smoky quartz, though truly the results of this process should be called gold topaz.

It's name comes from the Latin citrus, which means lemon. Used since ancient times, Caesar's soldiers wore citrine on their chest because it was believed to have life-saving properties in battle. Today it can be found in Brazil, the United States, Russia, Madagascar, Spain and France.

Citrine is said to have a detoxifying effect on the metabolism and to strengthen the immune system. It promotes physical activity which improves digestion. The purer and more intense the color, the greater the stone's healing properties.

Citrine is known as the stone of light, sun, and life. It symbolizes individuality and confidence. Citrine helps us to analyze events and take them in a positive direction. Harness and utilize your creative energy with Citrine!

With zodiacal affinity with Virgo, Citrine is also an important stone for Gemini and Leo.

Coral Chinese Blessing Symbol Necklace
Coral
I, for one, don't care if it's not really a gemstone.   I'm crazy about coral.
Coral is the skeleton of sea organisms, consists of almost entirely calcium, and is found in the reefs of warm seas all over the world. Colors range from pink, salmon pink, red, white, black, gray.

Almost every ancient civilization has used coral for healing or religious purposes. It was considered common knowledge that coral stanched the flow of blood, cured madness, and imparted wisdom. The ancient Egyptians placed pieces of coral in tombs as a protection against evil spirits because they believed that each piece contained a drop of divine blood. The Greeks believed coral was a protective stone against disease and magic.

Coral jewelry is often recommended for menopausal women because it protects against negative energy while preventing the loss of energy and vitality. Coral is said to prevent osteoporosis and promote healthy bone formation in children, as well as formation of new tissue of all kinds. Coral also can be beneficial for anemia. Edgar Cayce suggested coral for quieting emotions.

Coral symbolizes happiness and joy. It eases depression, improves expressiveness, banishes nightmares, and restores mental clarity. Red coral is said to be especially stimulating. Pink is said to be especially soothing.

Red coral is associated with Scorpio. Pink coral is associated with Taurus. However, coral has a zodiacal affinity with all signs.

Black Onyx Love Letter Peace Bracelet
Onyx
Another special stone for me is black Onyx. My wedding ring is an antique sterling silver setting with a lovely onyx rectangular cab and a little diamond in the center. Plus, I suppose that, being a Capricorn, the stone simply suits me.

Onyx, an agate, belongs to the quartz family. The color is opaque black. Onyx is found in Brazil, India, Madagascar, Mexico, and the United States. Do not confuse it with the yellow, brown, and green “onyx” stones that are varieties of calcite-aragonite.

In ancient times onyx was considered one of the most important healing stone. Onyx was often used as protection from black magic. Whereas a moonstone will “remember” the spiritual events that happen to a person, onyx will “remember” the physical events surrounding a person.
Onyx should be worn over a long period of time because its power develops slowly. It is very effective for skin infections, inflammation and sunburn.

Onyx deflects negative energy and brings inner harmony. Promoting self-confidence and a sense of responsibility, onyx also relieves stress, fights depression, sooths fear. Onyx is said to help the wearer achieve success.

Onyx has a zodiacal affinity with Capricorn, as well as Aquarius, Pisces, Cancer, and Libra.

Freshwater Pearl Copper Anklet
Pearls
I’ve never met anyone who does not admire pearls.

Pearls are calcified objects made by shellfish from the same material that they use to form their shells. Sand or some other foreign material gets under the skin of an oyster and irritates its skin. In response, the oyster coats the offending grain over a period of time with layers of pearly smooth calcium. The result is a pearl. Pearls are the product of both salt and freshwater oysters. Colors range from silver, cream, gold, green, blue, black and can be dyed. Pearls are found in the Persian Gulf, coasts of Central America and north Australia and Japan.

Pearls have been worn in jewelry by kings and emperors for thousands of years and can be admired in museums all over the world. The pearl jewelry of the Queen of Sheba is legendary. Lucifer is said to have broken his teeth because of his craving for pearls.

Pearls can stabilize the production of hormones. They are also used to alleviate chronic headaches and migraines.

Oysters are feminine in nature - they contain an embryonic object within them - and become tuned to the phases of the moon, which control tidal changes. Pearls are in tune with women, especially pregnant women. Long the symbol of woman’s perfect beauty, pearls also symbolize modesty and purity. A soothing influence, pearls bring feelings of peace and reduces over-sensitivity.

With zodiacal affinity for Cancer, Pearls are also important for all the zodiac signs. Often used as the birthstone for June.

Sodalite Cross Necklace
Sodalite
don’t know why I don’t work with stone more often. When I do, I’m always struck by its beauty.
Sodalite is a quartz sodium-calcium compound. The color is deep, dark blue with white inclusions of calcium. It can be found in Brazil, Africa, China, and the United States.

Since ancient times Sodalite has been the stone of artists, singers, and those in creative endeavors. In ancient Greece artists carried sodalite to develop their creative skills.
An excellent stone for reducing high blood pressure, Sodalite has a regulatory effect on the thyroid and all glandular functions, including diabetes. It is said to be effective in combating the effects of natural and artificial radiation.

Believed to promote inspiration and creativity while providing protection, Sodalite symbolizes self-confidence and loyalty. It promotes spiritual harmony and is good stone for calming hot-tempered people.

Sodalite has a zodiacal affinity for Sagittarius.

Turquoise Tears for Planet Earth Bracelet
Turquoise
A favorite stone of mine?  All I will say is:  She who dies with the most turquoise wins.  Or something like that.

Turquoise is an aluminum acetate phosphate usually found in the seams of aluminum rich rocks in the area of copper mines. Colors range from light blue, sky blue, turquoise blue to green-blue. Turquoise can be found in Arizona, Mexico, Tibet, China, Poland and France. Some of the most beautiful turquoise is found in Arizona.

Discovered in Turkey by Crusaders, turquoise has been a popular protective gemstone since ancient time. In the thirteenth century Turquoise was said to protect the wearer from injury from falling, particularly from horseback. Turks attached the stone to the bridles of horses as amulets; it was believed to render them more surefooted and enduring. Long considered a holy stone by American Indians, they believed turquoise was a magic stone that protected against all harm. Indian legend says that a man who could go to the end of the rainbow and dig in the earth would find a turquoise. In the Middle Ages it was believed to give women a sense of happiness and contentment, while guaranteeing success and power to men.

Turquoise is beneficial for the whole body, but especially the respiratory and immune systems. Those strongly affected by pollution can find turquoise very helpful. Turquoise is also helpful with general stomachaches, rheumatism, infections, inflammation, and speeds recovery after illness.

Turquoise symbolizes beauty. It elevates goals and understanding; encourages creative problem solving. Turquoise can help you get more in tune with others and increase communication skills. Stabilizing extreme mood swings, it counteracts apathy.

With zodiacal affinity for Aquarius, Turquoise is also an important gemstone for all the zodiac signs. It is the common birthstone for December.
